Wes-tone guitars continued to be distributed by MTI until 1984 when St.Louis Music, who was a partner in the Matsumoku operation, took over the brand name and phased out its older Electra brand (also made by Matsumoku) in favor of Electra-Westone, and then Westone. On this version, the scratchplate is black and matches the body contours on the top and bottom, and the front of the headstock is the same colour as the body. The serial number is on the neck plate, not on the headstock. 1982. As shown in the 1982/3 catalogue, the (White) scratchplate curves in towards the neck, not towards the upper horn.

May 11, 2019 · In 1987, Matsumoko dropped guitar manufacturing and SLM was forced to move production to Korea. Westone only survived a few more years, with SLM ceasing production sometime in early 1991. Sometime in the early 1990s, the brand reappeared in England with a new model line and direction. Oct 27, 2020 · Salvaged from a neglected Westone Thunder I-A guitar owned by a relative; serial number on the neck is 3082285 which I think indicates 1983 manufacture. There is one small screw hole at the bottom pick up which has been drilled a little off centre (see pic), but it's clearly been like this since manufacture.

The body is made from Canadian ash with a paduak top, and a bolt on neck of hard maple. The neckplate contains the serial number and the words ''Matsumoku made in Japan''. The fretboard has 22 frets all in a good condition. The bridge/tailpiece, nut and knobs are all in brass - a common feature of Westone models and of quality.
